Somewhere in rural India, in the late nineteenth century, a cow was eating mango leaves. Its kidneys processed the plant's toxic compounds, and its urine was collected, boiled, and molded into small yellow-green balls. Those balls crossed oceans, reached the hands of J.M.W. Turner, Winslow Homer, and Rembrandt, and became the most luminous, most translucent, and most impossible-to-ignore color in all of Western painting. Its name: Indian Yellow.

1. What Indian Yellow Was: The Color No Other Pigment Could Match
Indian Yellow was not merely yellow. It was a color that glowed from within. Highly translucent, it allowed light to pass through paint layers and reflect back, creating a luminosity painters described as "solar" โ unlike any mineral or vegetable yellow available at the time.
Its competitors โ mineral yellow ochre, Naples yellow (toxic), gamboge (highly corrosive), chrome yellow (unstable) โ were either opaque, dangerous, or faded quickly in light. Indian Yellow had unique properties:
- Exceptional transparency โ ideal for watercolor and oil glazes and velaturas
- Deep warm tone โ ranging from lemon to amber gold depending on dilution

For nearly two centuries, Indian Yellow arrived in Europe as small yellow-green balls with a strong, unpleasant odor โ and nobody in London, Amsterdam, or Paris knew exactly where it came from or how it was made.

In 1883, the Society of Arts in London commissioned an Indian trade inspector named T.N. Mukharji to trace the origin of the mysterious yellow pigment. Mukharji traveled to the town of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, and what he found was at once simple and disturbing.
The pigment was produced by a small community of cattle keepers โ the Gwalas โ who fed their animals exclusively on fresh mango leaves (Mangifera indica). Mango leaves are rich in a compound called euxanthic acid, which bovine kidneys metabolize and excrete in urine as magnesium euxanthate โ a substance that, when dried, forms the famous yellow balls.
The process was simple and brutal:
- Cows were confined and fed only mango leaves โ a diet that made them chronically ill, as the leaves lack the nutrients essential for cattle
- Urine was collected daily in ceramic pots
- The liquid was heated and filtered until the yellow salt precipitated

Painting rooms, libraries, and music halls of English and French mansions were painted with Indian Yellow variations. The color created environments with a unique light quality โ rooms that seemed eternally bathed in afternoon light even on grey London days.
The British Aesthetic Movement โ led by Oscar Wilde and James McNeill Whistler โ adopted yellow as its fetish color. The literary magazine The Yellow Book (1894โ1897), the publication of English decadentism that launched Aubrey Beardsley, used yellow as aesthetic manifesto. The association with Indian Yellow was inevitable: the rarest, strangest, and most beautiful color, with the most disturbing possible origin.
5. The 1908 Ban: The End of a Legendary Pigment
Mukharji's 1883 report had an uncomfortable conclusion beyond the revelation of the origin: the condition of the cows in Mirzapur was deplorable. The animals showed clear signs of malnutrition, liver disease, and chronic suffering โ a direct consequence of a diet consisting exclusively of mango leaves.
In the following decades, pressure grew. British animal protection societies included Indian Yellow in their campaigns. The British colonial government in India, under pressure, finally banned the production of the pigment in 1908 โ citing animal cruelty as the official justification.
The ban ended centuries of production. The last balls reached Europe around 1910. From then on, Indian Yellow entered history as one of the most coveted and most ethically controversial pigments in all of Western art.
6. The Chemistry of Yellow: Why It Was So Special
The substance responsible for the color is magnesium euxanthate (chemical formula: CโโHโโ MgOโโยท5HโO). When pure, it is a yellow-green powder that in solution produces an intense golden yellow, highly transparent.
Its main optical characteristic is fluorescence: euxanthate absorbs ultraviolet light and re-emits it as visible yellow light, giving surfaces painted with it that "alive" glow that artists described as impossible to reproduce with other pigments.
Today, magnesium euxanthate can be synthesized in a laboratory. Some art supply companies produce a synthetic "Indian Yellow" with similar optical properties, without any animal derivation. But purists claim the synthetic product, though chemically identical, has a slightly different light quality โ and the debates continue in watercolorist and oil painter communities.
7. Indian Yellow's Legacy in Contemporary Design
The deep golden-yellow it popularized in the nineteenth century influences color palettes to this day:
- Farrow & Ball has India Yellow (No. 66) in its catalogue โ explicitly inspired by the historical pigment, used by decorators to create that specific Victorian luminosity
- Benjamin Moore and Little Greene have equivalents in their historical lines
